The Legislation:

The Fair Elections Now Act would establish full, voluntary public financing of campaigns for U.S. Senate. Based on the “clean elections” model that has been successful at the state level in states such as Maine, Vermont, and Arizona, this legislation would enable any Senate candidate to receive full public funding for his or her campaign as long as the candidate raises a set number of $5 “qualifying” contributions to show that he or she has public support. Candidates who receive public funding must agree not to accept private campaign donations. By eliminating private campaign donations – a major source of special interest influence on Congress – this landmark campaign finance reform would help to ensure Congress acts in the interest of their current and aspiring middle-class constituents. H.R. 1614 applies the same system to campaigns for the U.S. House of Representatives.
