The Legislation:

The Homeownership Preservation and Protection Act is one of several strong bills proposed to prevent more middle-class families from falling victim to unfair lending practices that could cause them to lose their homes and their life savings. The bill bars brokers and lenders from steering borrowers into a higher-interest mortgage than they would otherwise qualify for, bans sub-prime loans that provide no tangible benefit to the borrower, and requires that lenders verify borrowers’ ability to repay loans. The bill also includes strong enforcement measures, empowering state attorneys general to enforce its provisions and enabling aggrieved borrowers to hold the current owner of their mortgage debt liable for illegal loans.
